The company, founded in 2003 by Martin Keen and Rory Fuerst, became famous for its Newport outdoor sandals with patented toe protection technology. Building on this great success, KEEN has developed a wide range of outdoor and leisure products and concentrates on the production of high-quality hiking shoes and general outdoor and leisure products. Technology and innovation are combined with a laid-back look and fashionable details. Since 2010, some of the products have also been manufactured in the company's own factory in Portland.
